A Day in the Life of a Zenoid: Jim Goldman
At Zeno Group we are a fun, eclectic and downright pretty awesome group of people. Through our new “A Day if the Life” series we invite you to get to know each and every one of us a bit better and find out what makes us all fearless in our own way.
Jim Goldman, Executive Vice President
4:15am: Alarm (Alarm Tone: “Sunrise” on my BB10).
4:30 – 4:45am: Greet the sleepy puppies, Cayo and Belda, get their breakfast together, a cappuccino for me, a quick check of CNBC, email, futures, and on the elliptical for 35 minutes by 5am.
5am – 5:40am: Elliptical and VERY loud music (at least until House of Cards comes back) on my iPad. No BB, no phone, no Mac. My time.
6:15am – 8:05am: Commute to the office (unless I’m flying and then it’s a commute to SJC or SFO instead.) Long commute can usually be billable time – client calls, internal calls, media outreach. I can be very productive at 15 mph.
8:15am: The office Keurig and I get re-acquainted, a drink for my prosperity bamboo from my fiancée Candice, and I’m back on the phone.
8:30am – 9:45am: Working on a deck for a new business crisis client due Friday.
10am – 11:30am: Working on a new business presentation, also due Friday. Ugh.
Noon – 1:15pm: Duck out for lunch with Jack Tretton, former CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment of America. Great guy, and great source for industry trends and information.
1:45pm – 3:30pm: My colleague John Moore and I are simultaneously working on the new biz pitch for Friday and also on Thought Leadership ideas for client McAfee.
3:30pm – 4:30pm: Researching documentary production ideas for our client Giant Magellan Telescope Organization. Awesome project.
7:45pm: Finally leaving the office.
Kidding.
5pm: Wanted to leave the office an hour ago so as not to get destroyed in the buzz saw of Silicon Valley rush hour traffic. I live 78 miles from the office. If I time it right, I can now be home by 6:30.
7:05pm: Didn’t time it well today. Scrambling to get dinner going so my two sons, Jeb (13) and Wyatt (9) have a good dinner when they both get home from soccer. (Taco night tonight)
7:55pm: Boys home and showered, dinner on the table for us; dinner in the bowls for the puppies; we all catch up on our days. I’m always curious about school, and they’re always curious about Zeno Group. Family dinner is VERY important in our house.
8:25pm: Dinner done, dishes in progress, boys upstairs finishing homework, puppies digesting.
8:30pm: Winding down in front of the TV, telling jokes, relaxing, snuggling in.
9pm: Both boys to bed; I’m in bed with my Mac, my BB, on the phone with Candice, catching up on the day, returning late emails, getting the schedule together for tomorrow, finishing another deck, and catching up on as much reading as I can to flush out new biz leads, trends, anything for context and relevance—The Merc, Recode, TechCrunch, TVNewser, CNBC.com, and lots of others.
10:53pm: G’night!
5 Things you should know about Jim
Fearless moment: Leaving the world of journalism behind, the only career I’d ever known, for the world of public relations. Old dog? Meet new tricks!
Most Memorable Zeno Moment: The first time I met Barby and she was wearing a sleeveless top which showed off those “guns!” #Intimidated!
If not a Zenoid, I’d be a … Shepherd. Kidding. Probably still a reporter.
Social network of choice: LinkedIn, hands down.
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be? Anywhere with my kids, Candice, and the puppies nearby, and I’m a happy camper. If it’s on a beach, well, so much the better.
